Building a Legacy Out of the Ashes — Why Mental Health IS Workplace Safety

The Invisible Safety Net

When we talk about workplace safety, our minds often go to hard hats, steel-toed boots, and physical hazards. But the most devastating risks are often the ones we cannot see: the mental toll of high-pressure environments, the “grind” of hustle culture, and the catastrophic lack of support systems when life hits hard.

Psychological health is not a “perk” or a “soft skill”—it is a fundamental pillar of a safe workplace. A distracted, burnt-out, or mentally unsupported worker is just as much at risk as one working without a harness.

My “Why”: Honoring Aaron

The Aaron Daniel Olfert (ADO) Scholarship Fund was born out of a desire to turn a personal “storm” into a lighthouse for others. For me, honoring Aaron means more than just keeping a name alive; it means ensuring that no other family has to navigate the aftermath of a system that failed to prioritize the human being over the bottom line.

This fund is our commitment to making slow burn a professional standard, not just a personal philosophy.

Beyond Funding: Tools for Change through AASP

We aren’t just writing checks for tuition. Our mission is to produce tangible tools and resources in partnership with the AASP (Alberta Association for Safety Partnerships).

We are investing in the next generation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) leaders by providing them with the framework to implement psychological safety protocols. We want to empower these professionals to walk onto a job site or into a corporate office and have the resources to advocate for mental wellness as fiercely as they do for physical safety.

How to Get Involved

We are looking for applicants and partners who understand that safety is a holistic endeavor. Whether you are a student or a business leader, the goal is the same: to humanize the workplace.

  • The Deadline: July 30, 2026.

  • Who Should Apply: Students dedicated to changing the culture of workplace wellness in Alberta and beyond.

  • The Goal: To equip OHS practitioners with the psychological health tools needed to protect the whole person.

Final Thought

Legacy isn’t just what you leave behind; it’s what you set in motion while you’re still here. By focusing on psychological health today, we are preventing the storms of tomorrow.

Call to Action: Know a student in the OHS field who is passionate about mental health? Encourage them to apply for the ADO Scholarship before the July 30 deadline. Visit our scholarship page to learn more about our work with the AASP and how we are redefining safety.
